Fire Dampers & Intumescent sleeves for Ventilation Systems

When should Fire Dampers be installed?

Fire Dampers are a critical component in the majority of ventilation systems. Heating, Ventilation or Air Conditioning (HVAC) ducting often has to breach fire barriers such as fire walls and doors, creating essentially a weak point where fire (or smoke) can no longer be contained.

Where the ducting breaches these safety points a fire damper or intumescent sleeve must be used and installed in accordance with the current building regulations.

If it is required that some form of fire safety product is needed in your ventilation design ensure that you use a reputable installer as a bad install in any fire product could cost lives.

Types of Fire containment products for ventilation systems.

Intumescent Fire Sleeves

These come in 2 types – Foil sleeves and Metal sleeves. They are designed to be used with plastic ducting systems. Both types work in the same in that when they are heated by elevated temperatures caused by fire, they expand to many times the original size and as the plastic duct softens the expanding material will plug the hole in the wall where the duct goes through.

Intumescent Fire Blocks

Circular Fire Blocks – These are designed to be used inside metal ducting. When the heat from the fire is hot enough the material in the block will expand in the duct which forms a solid mass for the required amount of time.

Square Fire Blocks – These are designed to be used in fire rated doors and fire walls where air transfer grilles are installed. They work the same way as circular fire blocks.

Steel Curtain Fire Dampers

These come in a variety of types (see the above products). They all work in the same way. Each fire damper is constructed with a sprung curtain contained in a case. In normal situations the curtain is held up out of the airstream by a fusible link. When the surrounding temperature is elevated due to fire, the fusible link breaks which then causes the sprung curtain to rapidly shut.

These types of fire dampers come in a variety of different constructions, with different frames for mounting, different fire ratings. All the information that you would require is contained within the product downloads section, which can be found when viewing the product.

It is standard to install access panels to allow for maintenance and safety inspections to be carried out for each damper that is installed.

We only stock standard sizes in round or rectangular formats, please contact us with your custom sizes (for rectangular) so that we can get a competitive price to you.

Externally resettable fire dampers (with volume control)

These are designed to be used with round metal duct and come in a range of diameters 100mm up to 315mm.

These types of dampers can also be used for volume control with seven presets (10° set points from fully open to 30° from the fully closed position).

Unlike the steel curtain fire dampers, this type only has one blade and the fusible link and handle for the blade are external, allowing for easy adjustment and maintenance.

Please note that an access panel may still be required with this type of damper.

Fire Valves – Extract Only

These are air vavles which are used for extract air only.  They have an intumescent material on the back of the adjustable valve which expands when temaratures are elevated.
